In our third concert of the On The Waterfront Series, we bring to the stage Matt Hoyles, Elza and Mike Machado
Matt Hoyles is a low down, wailing bluesman, hailing from deepest darkest New Zealand.Whether it’s the gypsy blood, some weird, untold astrological phenomena, or the impact of spending 2 years in Detroit as a kid… maybe it was being the middle child… heck, maybe the moon was just right, and there was goofer dust in the air, or maybe he just got dropped on the head one too many times. Whatever the cause, this boy was born with the blues in his heart.
Drawing inspiration from legendary bluesy artists old and new, (think Son House in a battle royale with Gary Clark Jr. or Otis Redding duking it out with Seasick Steve,) Matt combines all influences both classic and modern to forge a powerhouse of passionate, blues fuelled soul that is wholly his own! Playing as a one man whirling dervish of bluesy soul explosions Matt masterfully commands gritty guitar, wailing harmonica, mad foot percussion and howlingly expressive vocals combine to create a unique rootsy sound that will get you stomping your feet and clapping your hands like there’s no tomorrow.
Elza is a singer, composer and producer based in Vancouver. Her music is introspective, haunting and emotionally charged. Her dark and intricate sound is inspired by a litany of genres mainly composed of 90’s alternative acts and mixed in seamlessly with her classical piano training and synths explorations. Elza brings her studio-born dreams to audiences with 7-piece live band, dazzling crowds with her rich, dark grooves. However, this time she will be paring her music down to an acoustic trio featuring guitar and cello and taking the audience to where it all started for her.
Mike Machado is a blues/rock artist located in Vancouver. Strongly driven by passion and heart to play new rock and blues music in the spirit of the greats of the past, his band Mike Machado Trio pays tribute to the psychedelic/blues/rock and roll spirit of the ’60s up through to the modern era with their sets filled with music by Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Cream, Stevie Wonder, Albert King, BB King, Freddie King, Buddy Guy etc… They love to put on a soulful and high energy show and can guarantee a memorable live music experience.
